[Guest Post] Good Morning or Good Night Hello! I’m Theo, one of CJ’s unfortunate friends from our dorm (I’m kidding, mostly). Let’s answer the top five questions people ask me when I introduce myself: Name? Theo. Year? First-Year/Frosh/The Young One/Probably Younger Than You. 01 An interesting thing pointed out to me earlier this week is how obsessed the US is with capitalizing things. In official signage, everything is capitalized: Red Line, Transportation Security Administration, Stata Center, et cetera. This is not true of most countries â€" in Canada, or the UK, or France, the signs you see would read: Red line, Transportation security administration, Stata center, et cetera. Maybe this is why internet culture in the US cares so much about random Emphasis with capitalization. 02 cj: i asked theo if he was younger than most of the admissions blog readers. to which he replied that he was younger than most people who asked him this question, who were other mit students. he didn’t actually answer whether he thought he was younger than most mit applicants. 03 cj: i will also not allow theo to have a stronger annotation game than me :( Course? 14 and 18. (In which I usually proceed to say that 14 is Economics for all the Course 6s.04 cj: course 6 is electrical engineering and computer science, course 18 is mathematics. almost all mit students would know what these course numbers are since they’re like, two out of the top three declared courses ) Dorm? EC.05 cj: east campus ???? Wow, this one actually depends on time/situation, but it’s usually along the lines of what classes are you in? Mine are 21M.734, 21G.501, 14.73, and 18.022.06 21M.734 = Lighting Design; 21G.501 = Japanese 1; 14.73 = The Economics of World Poverty; 18.022 = Multivariable Calculus, a GIR. (One of the professors for 14.73 is Esther Duflo, the Economics Nobel Prize winner this year. It’s my least favorite class but it has my favorite content.) People usually can only tell what 18.022 is, and is 14.73… Economics? Still? I hope so. I also have an advising seminar, 21M.A16.07 cj: a first-year advising seminar is a class that some first-years take. if you take an advising seminar, whoever teaches your seminar is also your adviser for the first year. 21m.a16 is beyond independent filmmaking. Honestly, I’d rather talk about something other than the standard Five Questions though. Can I interest you in games such as AI: The Somnium Files,08 cj: i learned the correct pronunciation of ai in this title isn’t spelled out like ay eye, but like the word eye which are simultaneously cheap jokes and incredibly well-thought storylines? My floor played it until 4:30 in the morning on Saturday, before I started one of my many assignments due this week. Would you like to play Tractor? I learned it recently, but it is probably the game I have spent the most time playing09 cj: can confirm, people play too much tractor on our floor since coming to MIT. A game is incredibly long â€" I have only played the game to completion once, when I stayed up until the sun rose and went to dinner at 10 am with two of my close friends, before sleeping for five hours.   Would you like to play Mahjong? The games don’t take quite as long, but we still play for seven hours at once a lot of the time. The Mahjong club meets 7 pm on Saturdays, and I often wake up, grab breakfast and head over to play. It is lots of fun. Or maybe I can talk about how serene East Campus is at seven in the morning, watching the sun rise, when I have class in four hours, while counting the minutes of sleep I could have gotten over and over again. The early risers are still indoors, and most nocturnal people are hiding in their rooms as the sun begins its brief appearance for the day. Or I can talk to you about Good Morning vs. Good Night, in the awkward time between midnight and sunrise where no one can really make up their mind. People on my floor, and at MIT in general, never know whether to say good morning or good night, even though they often stay up until 4 am.10 cj: well, not really, it’s actually quite rare To me, you should say good night â€" you are going to sleep after all. “Good night” is to “goodbye” as “good morning” is to “hello”. But also, I go to sleep at 8 am just as often as 1 am, or 7 pm. So maybe I’m not the expert. 11 We also just argue about whether you can always say good morning, or always say good night, whatever the time is. We debate a lot of topics on my floor. It’s one of my favorite traits about my floor. We currently have a softness scale, ranking floor and floor-related people from Soft to Not Soft, that people debated a lot on. CJ thinks I am Not Soft (9/10), and some other friends think I am Soft (3/10). I have constantly struggled with sleep â€" my sleep cycles aren’t a constant 24-hour cycle, but fluctuate from 16 hours to 36 hours. I sleep through almost the entirety of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, except when I made lumpia with CJ. But often, I get an average of four non-consecutive hours of sleep a night for a couple of weeks before I have a day like last Wednesday.   I spend a lot of time with friends. It means I get to spend time with friends who tend to stay up late, and friends who wake up early, without feeling like I am sacrificing myself. I already won’t be sleeping, so I spend time with them. Lots of people say choose two: school, friends, sleep. But I didn’t get to choose; my body chose for me. I’ve run through the different solutions for sleep: magnesium and melatonin, reducing stress, no screens an hour before bed, listening to calming music or stories. Dark rooms without any light. Changing where I sleep. None of these really help me get to sleep. My body doesn’t like being told what to do (it probably inherited the stubbornness of my badass grandmother, but that’s a different story, a different time). The most I can do is get better quality sleep, and it requires a lot of effort. I don’t get the sleep everyone talks about. But I am not constantly tired either â€" it’s not a perpetual state of sleep deprivation. I can talk your ear off about the trade-offs between ethics and information in the poverty studies Esther Duflo conducted to get the Nobel Prize. I sometime spend a half an hour at 4:30 am working out because I have the motivation to move, and keep moving, as if I’m physically incapable of stopping. I walk across campus to Next House, sometimes just to grab dinner and work for a couple hours in the dining hall because I want a new space to work. And I do get to see MIT, at 7 am, in its glory of quiet energy, just waiting to burst out in some new discovery. The MIT that often hides behind the anxiety of pset deadlines, infinite midterms, and keeping friends on top of that. And MIT at 7 am, before I say good night, is beautiful. Danielle Joseph English 112/ 0002 Maginnes February 26, 2013 Genetic Modified Humans: Is Not Acceptable In the essay, titled Building Baby from the Genes Up? Ronald M. Green proclaims his approval of genetic selection and extraction of human genes. He gives reasons that support his outlook on the matter, that this will be useful to civilization. Ronald M. Green is in violation of several ethical codes, with his view on genetic modification. I am against genetically modified humans, and I will explain to you, why this is my stance on the subject. First, I will summarize exactly what Ronald M. Green says in his article about his view on genetic modification and why practicing it is vital. The issue with this is if we can manipulate genes to make them better, or even get rid of diseases as Green argues, then surely we would want we have paid for. When a parent can alter their childs abilities and life f or the better, they have control over what they want in a child. This is what critics mean to Green and genetic manipulation, when a person has control over the production of another they are playing God. No sensible fan of sport today denies the prevalence of drugs in virtually every major sport, yet none would argue they can ever be eliminated completely. Money alone would seem to guarantee that much. High profile athletes today are competing for high stakes, not just millions, but dozens of millions. GINGER Chop ginger and mix it with body lotion for a facial scrub. Avoid the sensitive eye MILK Soak a cotton pad with cool fresh milk and press it gently all over your face. Besides protein to feed your face, it gets rid of dirt thoroughly. Chill a cup of milk in the fridge before pouring the contents into a clothes spray. Use it like a sprinter over inflamed skin. Warm a bowl of milk in the microwave for half a minute and pour contents into a clothes basin. Soak your feet for half an hour and then give tit good hard brush to remove dead skin. Mix two teaspoons of turmeric powder and one teaspoon of honey with Just enough warm water to make a thick paste. Spread the mixture all over your face and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with water. For a three-in-one pre-bath treatment; blend two tablespoons of brown sugar with one teaspoon of fresh lemon Juice and two to three drops of olive oil. Rub the paste over rough areas like the knees and elbows. Citric IAC d trot the lemon unclogs the ores, skin-polishing sugar gets rid of surface dirt and olive oil moisture the skin. What You Can Learn from the Essays of Yale Quadruplets

If youve been following college admissions news for the Class of 2021, youll no doubt have heard about the Wade Quadruplets. All four of them were accepted to both Harvard University and Yale University. How did they do it? Christopher Hunt from College Essay Mentor shares his experience working with the brothers and what you can learn from their essays. Quadruplets? All four accepted to both Yale and Harvard? Surely Aaron, Nick, Nigel and Zach Wade are a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, a sort of Haley’s Comet in the world of college admissions. As the college essay coach who worked with the Wade brothers, who are all chose Yale, I am confident that the odds of my witnessing similar success are low. Extremely low. I am also confident that while â€Å"quadruplet† grabs the attention of most any reader, none of the Wades was accepted to any college simply because he was part of a four-pack. Each brother had the high grades and the test scores to be a strong candidate at any school in the country. Each also had multiple, demonstrated interests outside of the classroom. In other words, the Wades were like thousands upon thousands of outstanding students from whom admissions officers must form college classes. How to explain their extravagant admissions? The Wades all understood the importance of an outstanding personal statement. Eager to stand out, they labored over their Common Application essays. Each one fretted over the choice of topic, wrote a passable first draft, and abided by a truth enunciated by Ernest Hemingway: â€Å"The only kind of writing is rewriting.† Multiple versions and hours of effort brought each one to 650 words that distinguished him not only from his brothers but also from any other applicant. What might future applicants learn from the Wades? Anyone who takes the time to consider their essays, which areposted on the New York Times website, will find four shining examples of three simple principles. Identify a True Trait Some would say that the Wades had it easy. â€Å"My Life as a Quadruplet† was a no-brainer topic for a college essay. Right? Not so fast. During our early conversations, four brothers applying to many of the same schools raised the reasonable concern that admissions officers who read all four essays would tire of â€Å"yet another† essay about the quadruplet conundrum. I agreed. The â€Å"quad thing,† I said, was intriguing but insufficient. I asked each brother to dig deeper. Janine Robinson, the author ofâ€Å"Escape Essay Hell!† advises students to begin the college essay process by identifying a â€Å"defining quality.† I do the same, preferring the term â€Å"true trait,† which I define as a force that guides your life. Like any applicant seeking to make an impression on admissions officers, each of the Wades needed to narrow the theme of his essay to a characteristic which represented his personal values. The Wades’ stories had common roots. â€Å"We were four boys who shared one face,† wrote Aaron. A similar sense of forced anonymity inspired each student to become more than â€Å"one of the quads.† So each brother wrote about his search for individuality, a trait that is true for many high school students. Tell a Story Another reliable rule is to choose the essay structure most likely to have an emotional impact. Far too many students write expanded versions of their resumes. Others try to make their case with a five-paragraph essay, an argument framework that is less likely to provide a sense of a student’s personality. But it is the narrative structure, a form familiar to anyone who reads novels or watches movies, that creates space for the personal details that feed admissions officers’ core desire to get past the numbers and see applicants as people. Asked how students should approach college essays, Jeff Brenzel, a former Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale, said, â€Å"Keep it simple. Tell a story.† Nigel Wade traced the path from the day his father brought home a human anatomy book to the birth of his decision to become a doctor. Zach Wade wrote about creating an identity as a discus thrower on the track team at Lakota East High School. Nick’s story traced his path from an interest in Arabic to a scholarship to study for a summer in Morocco. Aaron wrote about finding himself the night he danced and sang Stevie Wonder’s â€Å"Sir Duke† to a standing ovation at his school’s talent show. Tapping material available to typical high school seniors, each brother crafted an essay with an intriguing beginning, a meaningful middle, and an emotional ending. Trust Your Voice A third essential of college essays, a distinctive voice, befuddles students, who wonder what admissions officers â€Å"want.† Students search for a style they believe with please the people with the power to admit or deny. Writing multiple drafts takes them even further from language that flows. Sentences written on a sunny Monday may not sync with those scribbled Sunday at midnight, leaving essays with an uneven quality. To the Wade brothers I offered a simple solution: read your essay aloud. When spoken, anything written to impress will sound awkward. Words pulled from the thesaurus will sound out of place. Noting the spots where the language loses flow, and inserting phrases that roll off of your tongue, is the best way I know to infuse an essay with the kind of distinctive voice that tempts colleges to say â€Å"admit.† Take some time to read their essays on the New York Times website. Asking Professors to Sit on Your Dissertation Committee Graduate study can best be explained as a series of hurdles. First is getting in. Then comes coursework. Comprehensive exams typically are the culmination of coursework in which you demonstrate that you know your stuff and are ready to begin your dissertation. At this point, you are a doctoral candidate, unofficially known as ABD. If you thought coursework and comps were difficult you’re in for a surprise. Most students find the dissertation process to be the most challenging part of graduate school. It’s how you show that you are an independent scholar capable of generating new knowledge. Your mentor is critical to this process, but your dissertation committee also plays a role in your success. The Role of the Dissertation Committee The mentor is highly invested in the dissertation’s success. The committee serves as an outside consultant, offering a more broad perspective as well as support for the student and mentor. The dissertation committee can serve a checks and balances function that can boost objectivity and ensure that university guidelines are adhered to and that the product is of high quality. Members of the dissertation committee offer guidance in their areas of expertise and supplement the student and mentor’s competencies. For example, a committee member with expertise in specific research methods or statistics can serve as a sounding board and offer guidance that is beyond the mentor’s expertise. Choosing a Dissertation Committee Choosing a helpful dissertation committee isn’t easy. The best committee is composed of faculty who share an interest in the topic, offer diverse and useful areas of expertise, and are collegial. Each committee member should be carefully selected based on the project, what he or she can contribute, and how well he or she gets along with the student and mentor. It’s a delicate balance. You don’t want to argue over every detail yet you need objective advice and someone who will offer insightful, and tough, critiques of your work. Ideally, you should trust each committee member and feel that he or she has your (and your project’s) best interests in mind. Choose committee members whose work you respect, who you respect, and who you like. This is a tall order and finding a handful of faculty who meet these criteria and also have the time to participate on your dissertation committee is a daunting task. It’s likely that not all of your dissertation member s will fulfill all of your professional and personal needs but each committee member should serve at least one need. Give Some Warning Work with your mentor to select committee members. As you select potential members, ask your mentor if he or she thinks the professor is a good match to the project. Aside from seeking insight – and making your mentor feel valued – professors talk to each other. If you discuss each choice with your mentor beforehand he is she is likely to mention it to the other professor. Use your mentor’s reaction as an indicator of whether to move forward and approach the potential committee member.  You may find that the professor is already aware and may have already implicitly agreed. Make Your Intentions Known At the same time,  don’t assume that each professor knows that you’d like them as a committee member. When the time comes, visit each professor with that as your purpose. If you haven’t explained the purpose of the meeting by email then when you enter, sit and explain that the reason you’re asked to meet is to ask the professor to serve on your dissertation committee. Be Ready No professor will agree to participate in a project without knowing something about it. Be prepared to explain your project. What are your questions? How will you study them? Discuss your methods. How does this fit with prior work? How does it extend prior work? What will your study contribute to the literature? Pay attention to the professor’s demeanor. How much does he or she want to know? Sometimes a professor might want to know less – pay attention. Explain Their Role In addition to discussing your project, be prepared to explain why you are approaching the professor. What drew you to them? How do you think they will fit? For example, does the professor offer expertise in statistics? What guidance do you seek? Know what the professor does and how they fit in with the committee.  Likewise, be prepared to explain why you think they are the best choice.  Some faculty might even ask, â€Å"Why me? Why not Professor X?† Be prepared to justify your choice. What do you expect expertise-wise? Time-wise? How much or little time and effort will you require? Busy faculty will want to know whether your needs outstrip their time and energy. Dealing With Rejection If a professor declines your invitation to sit on your dissertation committee, don’t take it personally. Easier said than done but there are many reasons people decide to sit on committees. Try to take the professor’s perspective. Sometimes it’s that they’re too busy. Other times they may not be interested in the project or may have issues with other committee members. It’s not always about you. Participating on a dissertation committee is a lot of work. Sometimes it’s simply too much work given other responsibilities. If they are not able to meet your expectations be grateful that they’re honest. A successful dissertation is the result of a great deal of work on your part but also the support of a helpful committee that has your interests in mind. Be sure that the dissertation committee you build can meet these needs.

Soil Erosion in Africa Soil erosion in Africa threatens food and fuel supplies and can contribute to climate change. For over a century, governments and aid organizations have tried to combat soil erosion in Africa, often with limited effect. The Problem Today Currently, 40% of soil in Africa is degraded. Degraded soil diminishes food production and leads to soil erosion, which in turn contributes to desertification. This is particularly worrisome since, according to the UNs  Food and Agriculture Organization, some 83% of sub-Saharan African people depend on the land for their livelihood, and food production in Africa will have to increase almost 100% by 2050 to keep up with population demands. All of this makes soil erosion a pressing social, economic, and environmental issue for many African countries. Causes for Erosion Erosion happens when wind or rain carry topsoil away. How much soil is carried away depends on how strong the rain or wind is as well as the soil quality, topography (for example, sloped versus terraced land), and the amount of ground vegetation. Healthy topsoil (like soil covered with plants) is less erodible. Put simply, it sticks together better and can absorb more water. Increased population and development put greater stress on soils. More land is cleared and less left fallow, which can deplete the soil and increase water run-off. Overgrazing and poor farming techniques can also lead to soil erosion, but it is important to remember that not all causes are human; climate and natural soil quality are also important factors to consider in tropical and mountainous regions. Failed Conservation Efforts During the colonial era, state governments tried to force peasants and farmers to adopt scientifically approved farming techniques. Many of these efforts were aimed at controlling African populations and did not take into account significant cultural norms. For instance, colonial officers invariably worked with men, even in areas where women were responsible for farming. They also provided few incentives - only punishments. Soil erosion and depletion continued, and rural frustration over colonial land schemes helped fuel nationalist movements in many countries. Not surprisingly, most nationalist governments in the post-independence era tried to work with rural populations rather than force change. They favored education and outreach programs, but soil erosion and poor output continued, in part because no one looked carefully at what farmers and herders were actually doing. In many countries, elite policymakers had urban backgrounds, and they still tended to presume that rural peoples existing methods were ignorant and destructive. International NGOs and scientists also worked off of assumptions about peasant land use that are now being called into question. Recent Research Recently, more research has gone into both the causes of soil erosion and into what are termed indigenous farming methods and knowledge about sustainable use. This research has exploded the myth that peasant techniques were inherently unchanging, traditional, wasteful methods. Some farming patterns are destructive, and research can identify to better ways, but increasingly scholars and policymakers are emphasizing the need to draw the best from scientific research and peasant knowledge of the land. Current Efforts to Control Current efforts, still include outreach and education projects, but are also focusing on greater research and employing peasants or providing other incentives for participating in sustainability projects. Such projects are tailored to local environmental conditions and can include forming water catchments, terracing, planting trees, and subsidizing fertilizers. There have also been a number of transnational and international efforts to protect soil and water supplies. Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize for establishing the Green Belt Movement, and in 2007, the leaders of several African states across the Sahel created the Great Green Wall Initiative, which has already increased forestation in targeted areas. Africa is also part of the Action against Desertification, a $45 million program that includes the Caribbean and Pacific. In Africa, the program is funding projects that will protect forests and topsoil while generating incomes for rural communities. Numerous other national and international projects are underway as soil erosion in Africa gains greater attention from policymakers and social as well as environmental organizations.
